Countries with more tourists than population

An Austrian travel company Intrepid publishes the list of countries, visited annually by more tourists than their population.

On the top of the list is Croatia, which in 2016 was visited by 57,585,000 tourists, while the population of the country is just 4,170,600, which means that Croatia is visited by 1380% more tourists than is the population of the country – approximately 14 tourists per capita.

Top ten countries of the list are:

 

  • Croatia – 57,587,000 tourists;  4,170,600 population – 1380.78%
  • Iceland – 1,891,000 tourists; 334,250 population – 565.74%
  • Hungary – 52,890,000 tourists; 9,817,960 population – 538.71%
  • Denmark – 28,692,000 tourists; 5,731,120 population – 500.64%
  • France – 202,930,000 tourists; 66,896,110 population – 303.35%
  • China – 30,915,000 tourists; 10,561,630 population – 292.71%
  • Singapore – 16,404,000 tourists; 5,607,280 population – 292.55%
  • Cyprus – 3,286,000 tourists; 1,170,130 population – 280.82%
  • Greece – 28,071,000 tourists; 10,746,740 population – 261.20%
  • Spain – 115,561,000 tourists;  46,443,960 population – 248.82%

The rating doesn’t include all the countries, however, if we look at Georgia’s data, we’ll see that last year, the country was visited by 204% more international travelers (7 554 936) than is the population of the country. However, within the same period, the number of foreign travelers, or tourists, who stayed in the country for more than 24 hours, was 3,478,932, which is less than the population of Georgia.

The company also published the list of countries, which are visited by much less tourists than the population of these countries:

  • Tanzania – 1,284,000 tourists; 55,572,200, population – 2.31%
  • Papua New Guinea – 198,000 tourists; 8,084,990, population – 2.45%
  • Kenia – 1,340,000 tourists; 48,461,570 population – 2.77%
  • Indonesia – 11,519,000 tourists; 261,115,460 population – 4.41%
