Cargo Turnover No Longer in Decline

The Cargo turnover is no longer in decline in the Georgian freight corridor – in the 8th month of this year, the cargo turnover volume reached 25.5 million tons, which is equivalent to the previous year. However, this figure is still less than the volume in 2016 which marks a decrease of 0.8 million tons.

The Cargo turnover in the Georgian freight corridor has been on the decline for a number of years. In 2015 it was 44.2 million tons, in 2016 this indicator became 42.3 million tons and in 2017 it came to 41.5 million tons.

The volume of cargos handled in Georgian seaports and docking areas has also decreased and in the first 8 months of the year reached 10.1 million tons, instead of previous year’s 10.7 million tons. Cargo processing in the marine terminals is also showing trends of decline; in 2015 the ports processed 19.2 million tons, in 2016 it was 17.6 million tons, and in 2017 processing numbers came to 16.3 tons.

Compared to the same period of the previous year, the number of containers in the ports has increased, reaching 291,215 TEU units in 8 months.

Within the transport sector, the volume of cargo shipping increased only in cases of transporting vehicles, coming to 18.7 million tons during the reporting period. The volume of cargo shipment by the civil aviation has decreased, coming to 16.3 million tons, a decrease of 5.2 million tons. The rail cargos shipping has decreased by 0.3 million tons and comes to 6.7 million tons.

With regards to ports, the cargo shipping indicators have increased only in the case of the Supsa Marine terminal, which reached 2.5 million tons (an increase by 0.1 million tons). The volume of processed cargo in the Poti port decrease by nearly 4.1 million tons, in Batumi port by 2,6 million tons, and in the Kulevi marine terminal, there was a decrease of one million tons. However, it is worth noting that the overall number of processed containers in ports has increased.
