Adrianne P.S. Smith, MD Celebrated for Dedication to the Field of Wound Care Medicine

Dr. Smith is sole proprietor of WPS Medical Consultants LLC, providing specialized medical consulting services for a variety of companies for their regenerative medical and wound care devices and therapies, managing clinical research projects in preparation for regulatory submissions, funding applications, sales and mergers, and new product commercialization. As a consultative chief medical officer, she supports Sanogenix Medical LLC, Wound Care Solutions, USA, and Regenesis Medical. Through these companies, she is able to offer a variety of innovative local and imported therapies to help wound care patients. Advising various wound and limb preservation centers, she informs the care designed to improve limb salvage in underserved and rural medical communities. Likewise, she supports the Kingdom Healthcare System and has extended her reach into the faith-based free care provided in San Antonio, Texas. Additionally, she continues to serve veterans and their medical teams, providing education for pain management using pulsed electromagnetic field energy (PEMF) devices aligned with Regenesis Medical.

Dr. Smith’s remarkable career began as the first woman to receive emergency medicine training from the United States Air Force in their first class in 1989 at Lackland Air Force Base. After nearly a decade of military medical practice in the U.S. Air Force, she joined the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, where she served for 10 years as the quality risk management director for the emergency department.

Dr. Smith’s proficiency in wound care medicine flourished when she became the founding medical director for the wound care and hyperbaric medicine division at the Texas Diabetes Institute. Under her guidance, the division grew significantly during her five-year tenure.

“The field of wound care requires constant innovation and adaptation,” Dr. Smith notes. “Working with regulatory bodies like the FDA and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to establish stronger protocols for regenerative medicine has been one of my most rewarding challenges.”

After leaving the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, Dr. Smith joined Kinetic Concept Incorporated (KCI) as chief medical officer. Her leadership helped the company grow from a $200 million bed business to a $2.8 billion operation in just two and a half years.

“I believe in empowering teams to perform effectively while offering strategic guidance,” Dr. Smith explains. “This outlook has consistently yielded the best results throughout my career.”

Dr. Smith’s contributions to wound care medicine extend beyond her professional roles. She authored the top-selling wound care textbook in the United States, “Wound Care Practice,” published in 2004, and has written numerous articles and book chapters, including “Effect of oral nutritional supplementation on wound healing in diabetic foot ulcers: A prospective randomized controlled trial,” “Negative Pressure Wound Therapy” and “Etiology of a Problem Wound.”

Multiple organizations have recognized Dr. Smith’s excellence with awards, including the Diabetic Foot Council Physician of the Year by the American Diabetes Association in 2002, the Clinical Excellence in Hyperbaric Medicine Award from the Undersea Hyperbaric & Medical Society in 2003 and Physician of the Year from the Texas Diabetes Institute in 2004.

Aside from her professional achievements, Dr. Smith remains active in her community through her work with the Kingdom Healthcare System and as a board member of a free clinic in San Antonio. She continues to teach wound care courses at medical and nursing schools, sharing her vast knowledge with the next generation of healthcare professionals.
