Mr. Leonard manages investment sales agents and finance originators across the Southeast and raises standards in the industry. His career reflects more than 30 years across multifamily, retail, office, industrial, self-storage, hospitality and mobile home park areas. Since 1999, he has led recruitment, hiring and training efforts and overseen listings, contract negotiations and mortgage originations for Marcus Millichap, a commercial real estate investment brokerage and capital markets services organization serving North America. Recently, as the market responded to advances in technology, he observed how artificial intelligence simplified candidate identification and influenced the profession.
“Everybody’s excited about artificial intelligence. The ability to recruit and try to get new people and use the technology to source is definitely a new thing that we’re working with, and it’s definitely positive and helpful,” Mr. Leonard said.
Mentorship and Service
John M. Leonard has built a legacy through mentorship, organizational leadership and outreach to the community. He began in sales in 1995 and became a regional manager in Las Vegas and Atlanta. Mr. Leonard relies on negotiation and asset management expertise while participating in community service with Pet Partners and the Atlanta Community Food Bank. He also supports the Wounded Warrior Project and USO.
“To have a good mentor certainly helps to set you an example,” Mr. Leonard said. “It’s my goal to be empathetic toward people I work with and try to get them to be better than they want to be for themselves.”
Mr. Leonard’s education includes studies in mathematics and English from Fairfield University, a bachelor’s degree in English from the State University of New York College at Potsdam, a Master of Business Administration from the University of Phoenix and a mini-Master of Business Administration in accounting and finance from Georgia State University. He also holds the certified commercial investment member credential.
His current firm has benefited from Mr. Leonard’s experience in encouraging professional advancement throughout the industry. He also earned the Marcus Millichap Regional Manager of the Year Award and received recognition from the Upstate New York Basketball Hall of Fame. Furthermore, coach Jerry Welsh from Potsdam shaped Mr. Leonard’s approach and contributed to a longstanding professional philosophy. “Seeing new professionals succeed, especially when they start careers in this field, marry, have children and start families, brings me the greatest satisfaction,” Mr. Leonard said.
