Where Are Georgia’s Top 10 Exported Goods Being Sold?

In 2022, The export of goods from Georgia increased by32% year-on-year to $5.6 billion. However, the share of re-exports out of the country’s exports is traditionally relatively high. Re-export refers to the export of goods that have been imported to Georgia. Georgia’s exports increased by 18.4% year-on-year to $3.7 billion without re-export. The share of local exports out of total exports was 66%.

Since local exports only include goods produced in Georgia, they better reflect the country’s export potential. The ten largest product groups account for 50% of local exports. It would be interesting to see where these products are being sold and what the recent trends are.

10. Electricity – $84 million

In 2022, Georgia exported 84 million dollars of electricity, five times more than the previous year’s figure. In terms of volume, 971 million kWh of electricity was exported in 2022 – an increase of 580 million kWh from a year earlier. Turkey bought 94% of the exported electricity, followed by Armenia with 5%.

In January-April 2023, Georgia exported $12 million of electricity, compared to only $200,000 worth during the same period in 2022. Turkey remains the primary export market.

9. Precious metal ores and concentrates – $85 million

In 2022, Georgia exported 85 million dollars of precious metal ores and concentrates, twice the amount in 2021. In terms of volume, 30,000 tons of precious metal ores and concentrates were exported in 2022, representing a year-on-year increase of 19,000 tons. Around 96% of those exports went to China, and 3% to Bulgaria.

In January-April 2023, the export of precious metal ores and concentrates fell by 19% year-on-year. China remained the primary export market.

8. Live Animals – $87 million

In 2022, Georgia exported 87 million dollars of live animals, a 40% increase from 2021. Cattle accounted for $58 million in sales, followed by sheep ($22 million). Azerbaijan was the leading export destination for live animals, accounting for almost half of the market ($40 million), followed by Iraq ($32 million).

In January-April 2023, the export of live animals increased by 13% year-on-year. The largest export markets were once again Iraq, Azerbaijan and Saudi Arabia.

7. Hazelnuts – $99 million

In 2022, Georgia exported 99 million dollars of hazelnuts, representing a 15% decrease year-on-year. In terms of volume, exports amounted to 23,800 tons in 2022 – 618 tons less than the year before. 30% of the hazelnut exports went to Italy, 23% to Germany and 6% to Armenia.

In January-April 2023, the export of hazelnuts increased by 11.4% year-on-year. The largest export markets were Germany, Italy, Turkey and Spain.

In terms of volume, 13 million liters of ethyl alcohol and spirits were exported in 2022, which is 4 million liters less than in 2021. 54% of the exports went to Russia, 23% to Ukraine, and 9% to Belarus.

In January-April 2023, the export of ethyl alcohol and spirits increased by 53% year-on-year. Russia and Ukraine are still the main export markets.

In 2022, Georgia exported 176 million dollars of clothing, 30% more than the previous year’s figure. Knitted garments accounted for 75% of clothing exports. 79% of the exports went to Turkey, 17% to different EU countries, and 1.3% to the UK.

In January-April 2023, the export of clothing decreased by 8.4% year-on-year. The main export markets are Brazil, Turkey, the Czech Republic, Italy, and Poland.

In 2022, Georgia exported 209 million dollars of non-alcoholic drinks, 1.1% less than the previous year’s figure. In terms of volume, 339 million liters of non-alcoholic drinks were exported in 2022, 24 million liters less than in 2021. 45% of the exports went to Russia, 14% to Kazakhstan, and 7% to Armenia.

In January-April 2023, the export of non-alcoholic drinks increased by 28% year-on-year. Russia, Kazakhstan, Armenia and Azerbaijan are still the main export markets.

In terms of volume, 103 million liters of wine was exported in 2022, 14 million liters more than in 2021. 64% of the exports went to Russia, 12% to the countries of the EU, and 5% each to Ukraine and China.

In 2022, Georgia exported 282 million dollars of mineral and nitrate fertilizers, 136% more than the previous year’s figure. In terms of volume, 462,000 tons of fertilizers were exported in 2022, which is 10,000 tons more than in 2021. 53% of the exports went to Peru, 11% to India, and 7% to Ghana.

In January-April 2023, the export of fertilizers decreased by 45% year-on-year. Peru, India and Romania are still the main export markets.

In 2022, Georgia exported 453 million dollars of ferrous alloys, 5% less than the previous year’s figure. In terms of volume, 229,000 tons of fertilizers were exported in 2022, 71,000 tons more than in 2021. 51% of the exports went to the US, 24% to Russia, and 12% to Turkey.

In January-April 2023, the export of ferrous alloys decreased by 57% year-on-year. Russia, Turkey, the US, and Algeria are the main export markets.
