French MPs Pass Amendment To Ban Advertising To Promote Black Friday

French ministers of Parliament have adopted an amendment to ban all publicity for Black Friday. The move is part of the government’s “anti-waste” law to try to limit what they believe to be mass overconsumption.

Over 600 big brands are boycotting Black Friday sales this year, in order to reduce overconsumption.

“Each year, 500 million items of clothing are thrown away in France. We don’t want to participate in a day like Black Friday which encourages overconsumption”, they announce.

The collective states that Black Friday is not just bad for the environment but also bad for society; whilst bargains might be had, it states, jobs become precarious if manufacturers and retailers are not paid the right amount.
